Truth Documentation Department
The Truth Documentation Department is a cornerstone of the Commission for Investigation of Violence and Reconciliation and Reparation of Victims in the Somali Region. This department is tasked with the critical responsibility of collecting statements from victims and witnesses of gross human rights violations. The department constructs a complete historical record, capturing the voices and experiences of those affected.
In addition to interviews, the department collects physical evidence from sites of violence and maps out these scenes for the commission’s site visits. This meticulous documentation process is essential for building a comprehensive and accurate historical record.
The department also conducts crime mapping exercises to identify crime hotspots and document mass graves, providing a clearer picture of the violence and its impact on the region.
Public hearings are another vital component of the department’s work. These hearings not only serve to gather evidence but also to engage the public, fostering transparency and trust in the commission’s processes. By involving the community, the department ensures that the commission’s work is grounded in the lived experiences of the people it seeks to serve.
The department’s efforts are guided by the establishment proclamation and best practices in human rights documentation and evidence collection, ensuring that all information is meticulously documented and securely stored. This dedication to accuracy and thoroughness is crucial for supporting the commission’s mandate and objectives, ultimately contributing to the reconciliation and reparation of victims in the Somali Region.
